What are the odds in Wyoming?

IN GRADES 6 TO 8TH 15% OF THE CHILDREN USE MARIJUANA IN THE LAST YEAR

11% DEPEND ON OR ABUSE ILLICIT DRUGS OR ALCOHOL

Families in the state of Wyoming would not think much about sending their 12 year-old daughter to school every day. The same could be said, but not with as much assurance, about their 15 year-old son. No danger in school. What could possibly be dangerous about school? The fact is that although Junior High and High Schools undoubtedly provide adequate safety for their students, there IS a risk that the child will be around people who use drugs.

Well, what does it matter if there are 1-5 kids who do drugs in my child's Junior High That's no problem. She's plays soccer. No one on her team uses drugs, Right Think again.

Here are the shockingly true facts:

FOR CHILDREN BETWEEN THE AGES OF 12-17 YEARS - 15% USED MARIJUANA IN LAST YEAR

11% DEPEND ON OR ABUSE ILLICIT DRUGS OR ALCOHOL

This not only means that out of the 10 families you know (with children in the above range) 1-2 of their children have smoked marijuana in the last year, but it also means that roughly one of their children DEPENDS ON OR ABUSES illicit drugs or alcohol. Broaden this out to a normal public Junior High (700 kids) and you have 105 smoking marijuana and 77 depending on or abusing illicit drugs or alcohol.

There's no mystery why the number of seniors taking SAT's in Wyoming has dropped to only 8%. Compare that to Vermont who had 67% of their seniors take the standardized test. The students in Wyoming are subjected to drugs which inevitably affect, or ruin, their lives.

Wyoming parents don't second guess their 13 year-old son playing on a recreation soccer team. No harm in that, and there is no potential harm. Per statistics, however, 2 of those kids on his team smoked marijuana in the last year. In sports, teammates are liable to pick up traits and skills from each other. Is that what you want your son to adopt?

Let's see how this plays out in the long run. Same age group (12-17 years old) but with what the projections are in 2010:

16% USED MARIJUANA IN LAST YEAR

12% DEPEND ON OR ABUSE ILLICIT DRUGS OR ALCOHOL

It's just one more percent higher, right? Yes. It's no big deal then? No.

It translates into numerical form this way:

700,000 MORE PEOPLE USING MARIJUANA WITHIN A YEAR PERIOD

500,000 MORE PEOPLE DEPENDING ON OR ABUSING ILLICT DRUGS OR ALCOHOL

The above data solely focuses on the statistics for one state: Wyoming.

If you live in Wyoming the odds that your kids, family members, friends and neighbors are abusing alcohol or marijuana are very high.

I've heard about detox. When would I need drug or alcohol detox instead of alcohol or drug rehab?

Alcohol can be dangerous to stop using without medical supervision. If you are a heavy drinker or binge drinker, you may need alcohol detox before doing rehab.

Alcohol or drug detox for heavy drinkers and binge drinkers can help you get off alcohol safely and, as alcohol can really deteriorate the body, drug or alcohol detox can provide the physical boost you need before going to a drug rehab program.

In Wyoming one third of the population are binge drinkers, another large portion are heavy drinkers. So, in most cases, drug or alcohol detox will be needed before a person enters alcohol or drug rehab.

What if my problem is prescription drug addiction or dependency, not alcohol or illegal drugs?

Prescription drug detox would also be required before entering drug rehab for people who are taking prescription drugs. Stopping prescription drugs without medical supervision can be painful and dangerous. It is not recommended.

In Wyoming the drugs that are the most common are Vicodin, OxyContin, Adderall, Ritalin, Valium and Xanax. Whether you would need prescription drug detox and drug rehab depends on whether you have developed a prescription drug addiction or dependency.

In cases where the person is only physically dependent, a drug rehab program is not required. We would then advise a medically supervised prescription drug detox program that can safely and comfortably get you off of the drugs.

If you are also addicted, we would recommend follow up with drug rehab.

Drug Rehab Referral can help you find a prescription drug detox, and a drug rehab program if needed. You can restore your self-esteem and get the spring back in your step.
