When you think of West Virginia,
what do you think of? If you don't reside there, then you probably
think of national parks, The Civil War, West Virginia University and other
such things. The item you probably won't recognize, even if you lived
there, is the drug problem.
The scene in West Virginia is not
limited to basically one drug. There are problems with cocaine, marijuana,
and the non-medicinal use of painkillers. In the category of non-medicinal
use of painkillers, West Virginia shows up to be one of the states
furthest from optimum.
The prescription pain relievers causing
the biggest problems are methadone, Vicodin, and OxyContin, but OxyContin tops them all. In many cases, the
dependency or addiction starts with a prescription from the doctor.
However, in most cases you only need to take these drugs for a short time
to become dependent. And it doesn't take longer to become addicted
either.
The problem with these drugs is that they are so hard to quit. The pain of withdrawal can be almost unbearable and people often turn back to the drug rather than go through with it.
However, there is an answer - prescription drug detox. Prescription drug detox can help you get through withdrawal safely and without severe symptoms.
Drug Rehab Referral recommends a good prescription drug detox program as the first step in ending the dependency. When you've also become addicted, you would do the drug detox program first, and then move onto drug rehab.
If you need help with prescription drug addiction, dependency or abuse
We can help you find a good prescription drug detox program and, if needed, drug rehab. No matter how your problem started, we can help you.
What if I didn't get the pills from my doctor?
Many people involved in prescription drug abuse didn't
get their pills from a doctor - they got them from friends, parents'
medicine cabinets, off the Internet, through doctor shopping, or through
local dealers. Prescription drug addiction, dependency and abuse is a
problem with every age group, but the highest percentage of abusers fall
into the 18 to 25 year-old bracket - about 15% of young people in that age
group abuse prescription drugs.

This indicates that in college, in your son's or
daughter's living space (estimating 40 people) there are about six
people that are using prescription drugs to get high. That's just in
regard with prescription drugs, not to mention the broad spectrum of other
illicit drugs.
Speaking of illicit drugs, cocaine has its fare
share of use in the state. In that same age group (18-25 year-old), 10%
have done cocaine in the past year. Translate that into your son's or
daughter's college life, and that could be four of your children's
friends who have done cocaine.
These cocaine problems,
fortunately, are not going unnoticed by the police. Shabu, alias for
"poor man's cocaine", is the number one concern for police
in West Virginia. A Senior Superintendent for the force said this:
"…Illegal drug use of Shabu… still tops the list of
prohibited and dangerous drugs."
The above problem
concerning drugs in West Virginia is so threatening that on August 20,
2007, the Governor of West Virginia, Joe Manchin, awarded $687,286 to
various drug-free programs across the state. The governor said this about
the grants: "… Every child deserves a safe place and a caring
adult. These funds will assist public and private non-profit agencies with
drug and violence prevention efforts, after school prevention programs, and
family-focused violence prevention and drug education programs."
Is Alcohol Rehab and Alcohol Detox Also Available in West Virginia?
Yes. Alcohol addiction and abuse happens all the time, especially if you have been a heavy drinker or have been binge drinking from a young age.
Heavy drinkers or binge drinkers are usually advised to do an alcohol detox before they move on to an alcohol rehab. Quitting drinking on your own can be extremely painful, and can have medical complications. It's best to detox in a medically-supervised alcohol detox setting.
At Drug Rehab Referral we can help you find an alcohol detox program and alcohol rehab if it's needed.

Virginia will benefit greatly from these grants.
Problems with
illegal drugs, prescription drug addiction, dependency and abuse, and
alcohol abuse may not be obvious to outside viewers and, sometimes, even
residents of West Virigina aren't aware of how big the problems really
are. But that doesn't mean there isn't a problem, and not seeing it
doesn't make it go away. There is a problem: a big problem. Help
support the governor's efforts by educating your kids.
And if
you know someone that already has a drug problem don't wait to get
them help - your intervention could save their life.
Don't let
your friends or family suffer any longer. To fully win the battle with
drugs and acloho, it's going to take an all-out effort.
