Drug Rehab, Ohio State University, Binge Drinking, and Prescription Drug Abuse Parties
Ohio State University, located in Columbus, Ohio has a student population of 52,000. OSU ranked 34th on the list of party schools in 1987, 12th in 2002 and has now achieved top 10 status for 2007. It's currently number 7. What this means is that if your kid is going to Ohio State, they have a very good chance of getting involved in alcohol and drug abuse, and might need drug rehab.

I don't know where Ohio State ranks on a list of schools for prescription drug abuse among students but since prescription drug abuse is actually as big a problem as any abuse of any other drug right now, let's assume we can give prescription drug abuse the same ranking OSE has for drinking and partying.
The odds of needing alcohol or drug rehab if you go to Ohio State could be three times higher than other universities.
- 25,000 students binge drink - that's an incredibly high number when you consider the student population is only 52,000
- 15,000 may be taking prescription stimulant drugs such as Ritalin or Adderall
- Prescription drugs such as OxyContin and Vicodin are also being abuse

If I lived in Columbus I might be questioning the school's leadership. I wouldn't want to even send my kids there for a football game, much less college. If you want your kids to graduate and be able to launch them into their new career instead of drug rehab, you might want to consider sending them to another school.
It might not be easy to control that many students, but it has taken 20 years for Ohio State to achieve the party school ranking it now has - plenty of time for measures to be put in place to get the situation under control. I would think that the school's leadership has neglected the problem. Or maybe it just has an unworkable plan.
However, even with the poor student behavior at Ohio State the athletic department seems to be getting control over their end of things. Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith's 1,000 athletes are regularly drug tested. The football team is tested regularly and often, under the direction of Coach Jim Tressel, and the get tough policy seems to be working.
In a recent student survey, it was found that as many as 30% of students abuse prescription stimulants - basically cocaine, in pill form - and, from the sound of it, Ohio State is right there at the forefront. People taking these kinds of drugs not only need drug rehab, they often even need a medical drug detox to get off the drugs safely.
One student, Jake Heppner, took a 70 milligram dose to help him concentrate so he could finish a paper. He never finished the paper, but now regularly takes the prescription drug ‘for fun.' He also isn't taking classes right now.
Another OSU alum, Bill, also takes prescription stimulants for fun. "Short term, it (Adderall) has only positive benefits," said Bill. I wonder if he's tried cocaine yet. Bill and Jake think they are buying medicine, although they can buy it on any college campus - they don't have to wait for a doctor to give them a prescription. They just go straight to the drug dealer and pay $3 to $5 for a 20 milligram pill.
Tom, another student - a philosophy junior - describes himself as a drug whore, "I'll take anything", he says.
Perhaps these three students are not representative of the whole school, but the odds are that Ohio State grads will be more in need of drug rehab than some school that doesn't have as high a party school ranking as Ohio State.
Is this the environment you want for your kids in college?
