Is it Possible to Overcome Methadone Addiction?

Many former heroin addicts who wanted to get off heroin have opted for methadone treatment. They are usually told they’ll be taking methadone for a short time and then will taper off on the dose and, eventually, be drug free.
However, the vast majority are parked on methadone.

It’s no longer necessary to stay on methadone treatment forever. Contact Drug Rehab Referral at 877-211-7428

Instead of getting the full drug detox and drug rehab treatment they need to get off drugs completely, their methadone treatment goes on and on for years and their heroin addiction is traded for methadone addiction.
Methadone is so addictive, and so hard to stop taking, that more people have trouble getting off it than heroin. Withdrawal can be very painful both physically and emotionally.

To make matters worse, many drug rehab facilities won’t accept someone who has a methadone addiction until they’ve tapered down to 20 – 40 milligrams. Most of them are taking 80 mgs. or more. But they can’t taper down by themselves because of the withdrawal symptoms.
However, there is now a solution. Some drug detox and drug rehab facilities have developed a protocol to be able to help a person overcome methadone addiction.

What If I’ve Tried Drug Rehab When I Was On Heroin and It Didn’t Work?

Many people on methadone treatment tried drug rehab before and it didn’t worked for them. Generally, this is not because drug rehab is unsuccessful, but many drug rehab programs are short or just not good enough to get down to the bottom of why a person is addicted and then ensure they’re set up so they won’t go back on heroin when they leave the drug rehab facility.

Also, some people who wind up on methadone treatment and coping with methadone addiction didn’t fully finish the program. Again, this is probably because of the program. Either the heroin addict couldn’t get through withdrawal, or the proper drug rehab steps after withdrawal were not implemented.

Consequently, they think drug rehab doesn’t work when it actually does. But, again, it has to be a good one - with a high success rate to prove it.

What If I Never Tried Drug Rehab and Went Straight onto Methadone Treatment?

Drug detox and drug rehab can still work for you. Some people who want to get off heroin are told taking methadone will be easier than going to rehab. But then their problem is methadone addiction, not heroin addiction.

Why Do We Have Methadone Treatment?

The original reason for methadone treatment was not that it was safer or less addictive than heroin. It’s basically because it was legal and didn’t have many of the problems associated with taking an illegal drug – especially one that usually is injected.

Methadone is taken orally so no one can get HIV sharing a needle. Methadone is legal so you can just go to a properly licensed doctor or methadone clinic to get it instead of committing crime, and it’s less expensive. It’s also not a crime to use it. So, it was perceived as the lesser of two evils.

That may well be true – but the person is still a drug addict – he’s just traded his heroin addiction for methadone addiction. It was just more acceptable than heroin and, therefore, considered a step in the right direction.
It was a compromise. But turned out to be a big problem.

Can Drug Rehab Help End Methadone Addiction?

Yes, but very few drug rehab facilities will accept someone with a methadone addiction, and those that will won’t accept even an 80 milligrams/day habit. For someone taking hundreds of milligrams/day, there was no hope at all.
